Main project results:
Development and establishment of an innovative pilot facility called “circular economy studio” (featuring circular use of resources involving no virgin materials focused on the installation and renovation of discarded mobile shipping containers, exterior and interior sustainable building solutions following the principles of industrial symbiosis and preparation for reuse, green walls and roof for rainwater harvesting, and use of textile waste as a thermal insulation material); established partnership between public and private stakeholders to increase the possibilities of circular economy in practice; practical demonstrations, creative workshops, training and non-professional education for better understanding and awareness of how circular economy works; innovative green solution in the field of construction of mobile, growing, modular buildings with comprehensive functional equipment following the principle of circular economy.
Project summary:
The project plays an important role in addressing the challenges posed by the lack of understanding of the possibility of circular use of resources. In certain areas, in logistics or construction industry, for example, discarded shipping containers or abandoned buildings are replaced with new ones only as the current building legislation does not provide yet for a circular approach to resource use. The project supports concrete implementation of a new circular economy action plan and proves that in everyday life the close link between economic growth and resource use can be broken through the re-use, consumption, or products that can be repaired or recycled and re-used. Circular economy could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 39%, and has significant potential for households and industry. Still, low awareness, insufficient knowledge and rare practice discourage stakeholders to opt for circular approaches. The project plays an important role in improving material efficiency as it uses only waste as a source. It seeks to reduce the pressure on demand for virgin materials and cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions by increasing re-use and repurposing waste/used materials for new designs.
